How To Find The Right Liposuction Surgeon
Selecting a liposuction surgeon involves some time and attention to identify one that is well trained, skilled and ethical. Obviously, a surgeon’s reputation for excellent liposuction results is often the most important, single divisive factor in selecting the right liposuction surgeon. It’s important to note that not just because a liposuction surgeon is experienced and talented in other cosmetic procedures, s/he may not be as experienced, or talented, in performing liposuction procedures. Therefore, it is imperative that you research a surgeon’s reputation. To find a good liposuction surgeon, seek referrals from other doctors, family, friends, review sites, medical directories, etc. Once you identify the right liposuction surgeons, interview other doctors, former patients, and friends regarding the surgeon’s reputation.
Evaluating Your Liposuction Surgeon’s Credentials
1. Is the liposuction surgeon board certified? There isn’t one specialty that specializes in liposuction. Surgeons can be trained in a variety of medical disciplines, such as: Dermatology, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology (ENT), or plastic surgery. So, a surgeon’s training may not be as critical as their record for safety, effectiveness and patient satisfaction.
2. Is the surgeon trained well?
3. What is the surgeon’s position on safety? Patients can only handle a certain amount of liposuction procedures at a time and should avoid excessive procedures. Some states limit the amount of fat that can be removed in a day. Finding a liposuction surgeon that strictly adheres to these safety requirements should be mandatory in your evaluation. Most deaths related to liposuction are due to a surgeon performing other cosmetic procedures in addition to liposuction. Therefore, you should assure, as should your surgeon, that the only procedure that happens is liposuction. Moreover, if you are going to numerous areas for fat removed, then space them apart by a month or so. Do not have numerous areas treated at the same time. Be sure to carefully analyze this point with your liposuction surgeon if you are going to have several areas treated.
4. Is the liposuction surgeon up-to-date with their training, knowledge, and/or skills? The more training, and the more recent the training, is a great signal that your prospective liposuction surgeon safe, skilled and has integrity. The surgeon should have been trained to develop an in-depth knowledge of severe liposuction complications, possible undesirable results of liposuction, surgical techniques for liposuction, clinical pharmacology, potential drug interactions, and optimal post-liposuction care.
5. In an emergency situation, is this surgeon competent to handle it? Especially assure that your liposuction surgeon is trained in addressing cardiac arrest. Make sure the surgeon is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
6. Don’t get caught up in a surgeon’s promotional material. Surgeons can be very egoic and this can be risky where the surgeon is unable to acknowledge their own limitations and would require additional skill development. This attitude places their patients at risk. Avoid arrogant and aggressive liposuction surgeons.
7. Be sure to find out whether the liposuction surgeon has ever been sued for malpractice. Find out why! Additionally, inquire whether any of his/her patients have been hospitalized after liposuction surgery.
Finding the right liposuction surgeon is not a difficult task, but it does require your time, energy, and careful attention. The results of your effort can be pivotal in the quality of care that you receive, whether you in fact improve your appearance and whether liposuction is safe. Good luck with your search.
